The name Sa Pa comes from Mandarin. Mandarin calls Sa - Pa, "Sa" means sand, "Pa" means beach. The location of this "sand beach" is on the right side of the km 32 bridge from Lao Cai to Sa Pa. In the past, there was no Sa Pa town, residents in this land all held markets on that "sand beach". Therefore, all local people say "go to Sa Pa market".

From the two words "Sa Pa", Westerners pronounced them without accents, so it became Sa Pa and they wrote those two words in French as "Cha Pa" and for a long time people called them "Cha Pa". according to the meaning of the Vietnamese word.

As for Sa Pa town today, in the past there was a vein of red turbid water, so the locals called it "Hung Ho", "Hung" is red, "Ho" is river, stream, red stream.
