Previously, horse racing in Bac Ha was simple. The road that is often chosen for racing starts from the center of the district, the destination is the road that starts to turn into Thai Giang Pho commune. On the road there are both flat sections and bumpy sections to test horse and horse manners. The destination is a tall tree with a red cloth hanging. The winner is the one who comes to the first place and gets the award. The reward is a wine pitcher or a piece of linen. Although the reward value is not high, Bac Ha's horse racing movement is still very exciting. In particular the boys train horses, eagerly waiting for the race day to compete with each other. In the race day, people around the region also came to cheer very much, creating a crowded and bustling atmosphere.

Not only ordinary horse racing, Bac Ha people also had horse racing shooting. In addition to being able to ride horses, have good horses, participants must also be a marksmanship gunman. When they reached the destination, they had to shoot accurately on the green cloth that was attached to the cliff.

After years of horse racing, the festival is no longer popular. In the 90s of the last century horse racing began to recover, there were a few horse races that were sporadically organized by the locality. The track is no longer a natural trail but is brought into the stadium. In 2004, for the first time, the horse racing festival was held on a large scale, attracting horse riders from localities in and outside the province. The biggest milestone was in 2007, marking the development of the horse racing festival starting for an annual activity.

Since then, coming back to Bac Ha traditional horse racing is held in early June every year. Horse racing is now not only confined to Bac Ha district but also attracting provinces to participate. The racetrack can change, the reward for the winner is not the bottle of wine or the linen strip.
